Magic magnetoresonances in metallic nanowires | A. S. Alexandrov

9 May 2007 | Subject: | Mesoscopic Systems and Quantum Hall Effect (cond-mat.mes-hall) | Abstract: | We examine the interplay between size quantization and Landau quantization in
the De Haas-Van Alphen oscillations of clean, metallic nanowires for two
different sets of boundary conditions -- `soft’ (first treated in Alexandrov
and Kabanov (Phys. Rev. Lett. {f 95}, 076601 (2005) (AK))), and `hard’, as
represented by the boundary conditions of an infinite round well. In both cases
we find that there exist {em three} fundamental frequencies as opposed to the
one found in bulk systems. In addition, we find that the additional `magic
resonances’ of AK are analytically well behaved, and that they may be also
observed in the infinite well case, where they are damped. We also compare the
numerically generated energy spectrum of the infinite well potential with that
of our analytic approximation, and present numerical calculations of the
oscillatory portions of the thermodynamic quantities for both models. | Source: | arXiv, arxiv.0705.1303 | Services: | Forum | Review | PDF | Favorites |
