Non-equilibrium coherence dynamics in one-dimensional Bose gases

Date 15 Jun 2007
AbstractWe study universal properties of non-equilibrium dynamics and coherence decay in one-dimensional quantum systems. By dynamic splitting of a single 1d quasi Bose-Einstein condensate we create two identical copies in a phase coherent state. If the two systems are completely isolated, we observe a sub-exponential coherence decay towards thermal equilibrium as predicted from the Luttinger liquid model. For tunnel coupled systems we observe decay to a finite coherence, the matter wave equivalent to phase locking of two individual lasers.
