Quantum generalization of the quasiclassical approach to chaotic dynamics
T. Micklitz ; Alexander Altland ;
Date 20 Jan 2009
AbstractWe discuss a quantum generalization of the quasiclassical Eilenberger equation for chaotic systems. Within the generalized framework, a conspiracy of quantum uncertainty and hyperbolic dynamics leads to a picture of quantum interference, conceptually similar to that of recent extit{semi}classical approaches based on the Gutzwiller trace formula. We apply the generalized theory to explain the formation of hard gaps in the spectral density of chaotic Andreev billiards, a phenomenon that so-far defied a non-phenomenological explanation.
