Observation of asymmetric spin changing transitions in a harmonic trap
S. Machluf ; J. Coslovsky ; P. G. Petrov ; Y. Japha ; R. Folman ;
Date 25 Feb 2010
AbstractWe observe asymmetric transitions between angular momentum states of magnetically trapped atoms on an atom chip, although time reversal symmetry imposes identical matrix elements. The asymmetry of these transitions, which are induced by electromagnetic noise with a colored spectrum, is related to the different trapping potentials experienced by the different angular momentum states. Such insight may prove useful for controlling atomic states by the introduction of noise, as well as provide a better understanding of the affect of noise on the coherent operation of atom chips.
