Majorana Fermions in Strongly Interacting Helical Liquids
Eran Sela ; Alexander Altland ; Achim Rosch ;
Date 25 Mar 2011
AbstractMajorana fermions have been shown to occur at edges and interfaces of gapped one-dimensional systems where phases with different topological character meet. Those phases may exist due to an interplay of spin-orbit coupling, proximity-induced superconductivity and external magnetic fields in helical liquids even in the absence of interactions. Here we investigate the effect of strong interactions, and construct the corresponding phase diagram. We find that strong interactions can suppress proximity-induced superconductivity completely, thereby stabilizing gapless fermionic excitations, which mix with Majorana states near interfaces. This may jeopardize long term Majorana coherence, unless elaborate read-out schemes relying on total fermion number parity are employed.
