Quantized Superfluid Vortex Rings in the Unitary Fermi Gas
Aurel Bulgac ; Michael McNeil Forbes ; Kenneth J. Roche ; Gabriel Wlazłowski ;
Date 18 Jun 2013
AbstractWe show that quantized vortex rings can be easily excited in trapped fermionic superfluids and argue that the "heavy soliton" observed in a recent experiment comprising superfluid Lithium 6 is a vortex ring. The long oscillation period arises naturally from ring dynamics rather than from an exotic two-hundred-fold increase in the effective mass of the soliton. The nature of the vortex ring and oscillation is elucidated with dynamical simulations of the unitary Fermi Gas within the time-dependent superfluid local density approximation of density functional theory.
