17 Jul 2013 | Abstract: | We study the frustrated multiferroic spinel compound CdV2O4 in pulsed
magnetic fields up to 65 T. The electric polarization is suppressed for fields
above 30 T indicating a field induced quantum phase transition. The existence
of this transition is also reflected by a change of slope in the field
dependence of the uniform magnetization. By modeling the magnetic properties in
the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling characteristic of vanadium spinels,
we show that the field-induced transition can be explained by including the
effects of the local trigonal crystal field. This distortion induces net
magnetization in one of the competing magnetic orderings, which is therefore
stabilized by large enough magnetic fields. | Source: | arXiv, 1307.4775 | Services: | Forum | Review | PDF | Favorites |
