Helical edge states in phononic systems using bi-layered lattices
Raj Kumar Pal ; Marshall Schaeffer ; Massimo Ruzzene ;
Date 24 Nov 2015
AbstractWe propose a framework to realize helical edge states in phononic lattices using two identical lattices with interlayer couplings between them. There are two masses at each site corresponding to the two lattices, which is analogous to up and down spin electrons in a quantum mechanical lattice. A methodology is presented to systematically transform a quantum mechanical lattice which exhibits edge states to a phononic lattice, thereby developing a family of lattices with edge states. A potential realization in terms of fundamental mechanical building blocks is presented for the hexagonal and Lieb lattices. The proposed framework is verified by numerical simulations, which illustrate that the direction of wave propagation can be controlled by appropriate polarization of lattice excitation.
