Fractional charges and quantum phase transitions in imbalanced bilayer quantum Hall systems | Jinwu Ye

4 Jul 2004 | Subject: | Mesoscopic Systems and Quantum Hall Effect | cond-mat.mes-hall | Abstract: | We extend the Composite Boson theory to study imbalanced bi-layer Quantum Hall systems. This theory puts spin and charge degree freedoms in the same footing and can also be used to study incoherent quantum disordered side and quantum phase transitions between different ground states. We explicitly bring out the spin-charge connection and classify all the possible excitations. In the ordered side, as the imbalance increases, the system supports continuously changing fractional charges and the spin-wave velocity decreases quadratically. In the disordered side, in a relativistic two-component bosonic Chern-Simon theory, the imbalance drives the system into a new state which is a quantum Hall state without the interlayer phase coherence. This new state has the right characteristics consistent with all the experimental results. We compare our phase diagram with a recent experiment and with previous results achieved from microscopic calculations. | Source: | arXiv, cond-mat/0407088 | Other source: | [GID 987156] pmid17280224 | Services: | Forum | Review | PDF | Favorites |
