AbstractWe show that correlated dynamics and long time memory persist in self-organized criticality (SOC) systems for all levels of external forcing as long as the system is not overdriven. Correlations are seen in multiple measures (such as waiting time and quiet time distribution functions, power spectra and rescaled range analysis) and therefore as many measures as possible should be analyzed before a system can be declared to be or not to be SOC. A consequence of the existence of these correlations is that a SOC time series is not simply a random superposition of events with sizes distributed according to a power law distribution, as has been previously thought.
