AbstractWe show that non-Abelian gauge fields in a higher-dimensional theory compactified on small extra dimensions lead to degenerate vacua in four dimensions. The degenerate vacua each separated by an energy barrier are metastable due to quantum tunneling and will transit to the true ground state, which is the superposition of these vacua and energetically favorable. As long as the size of the extra dimensions is smaller than about 10^{-16} GeV^{-1}, the present Universe is trapped in one of these degenerate vacua and the energy density difference above the true ground state can provide us with a small but finite cosmological constant which could solve the dark energy problem.
