Nuclear matter symmetry energy and the neutron skin thickness of heavy nuclei

Date 5 Sep 2005
Subject nucl-th
AbstractThe thickness of the neutron skin in finite nuclei and its relation to the nuclear matter symmetry energy are studied in the Skyrme Hartree-Fock model. For heavy nuclei, their neutron skin thickness is shown to correlate linearly with the slope $L$ of the nuclear matter symmetry energy at saturation density. From the most recent analysis of the isospin diffusion data in heavy-ion collisions based on an isospin- and momentum-dependent transport model with in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections, we have extracted a value of $L=88pm 25$ MeV and thus obtained stringent constraints on both the parameters of the Skyrme interactions and the neutron skin thickness of heavy nuclei. Predicted thickness of the neutron skin is $0.22pm 0.04$ fm for $^{208}$Pb, $0.29pm 0.04$ fm for $^{132}$Sn, and $0.22pm 0.04$ fm for $^{124}$Sn.
