Noise induced desynchronization and stability in the Lotka-Voltarra spatial system

Date 4 Aug 2006
Subject Soft Condensed Matter
AbstractThe classic Lotka Volterra prey-predator system on two spatial patches with additive noise and migration is analyzed. It is shown that, although the deterministic dynamics admits a marginally stable homogenous invariant manifold, the combined effect of noise and diffusion leads to the stabilization of a "soft limit cycle" in the homogenous subspace. The mechanism responsible for that phenomenon is related to desynchronization, generated by the noise. While the diffusion tends to synchronize the patches, it already attracts an already desynchronized system toward the center. This mechanism is conjectured to be universal for marginally stable dynamical systems on spatial domains.
