Low temperature thermodynamic investigation of the phase diagram of Sr3Ru2O7
Dan Sun ; Andreas Rost ; Robin Perry ; Andrew Mackenzie ; Manuel Brando ;
Date 2 May 2016
AbstractWe present heat capacity and magnetocaloric effect data from a comprehensive study of Sr3Ru2O7. By combining information from different experimental setups and techniques, we acquired a detailed dataset covering the temperature range from 4K to 60 mK, and fields between 0 and 12 T. By lowering the base temperature of measurement by a factor of four compared to that of previous specific heat and magnetocaloric experiments, we discovered a new quantum critical point at 7.5 T, close to the region in which an anomalous phase is found. We also determined that the boundaries of a putative higher field phase, in which neutron measurements show an incommensurate spin modulation at Q = (0.218, 0, 0) and symmetry breaking fields induce large transport anisotropies, are marked by weak thermodynamic features. However, several characteristics expected of equilibrium phase transitions are not observed.
