Coherent impurity motion in a strongly correlated hard-core boson quantum solid
Efstratios Manousakis ;
Date 14 Jun 2006
Subject Strongly Correlated Electrons; Statistical Mechanics
AbstractA quantum lattice gas model is proposed to capture the essential aspects of the motion of an impurity in a purely bosonic strongly correlated quantum solid (such as a He-3 atom in solid He-4). Within the ``spin’’-wave approximation the model reduces to an effective Hamiltonian in which the impurity motion couples linearly to bosonic excitations and in the non-crossing approximation we solve the Dyson’s equations for the impurity Green’s functions for the square lattice. We find that both substitutional and interstitial impurity quasiparticles form sharp well-defined coherent low-energy excitations. We discuss the possible relevance of our results to the superfluidity of solid He-4.
