Transition of memory in paste : Its visualization as crack pattern | Akio Nakahara

16 Jun 2006 | Subject: | Soft Condensed Matter | Abstract: | We perform drying experiments of paste and find that by vibrating paste before drying we can control future crack pattern which will appear in drying process. Due to its plasticity, paste remembers how it suffered mechanical force, so, as the paste dries, lamellar cracks appear, the direction of which is determined by the direction of the initial vibration. Here, we obtain a transition of the direction of lamellar cracks from perpendicular direction to parallel direction, when compared with the direction of the initial vibration, as we decrease the solid volume fraction of paste at the initial vibration. This result suggests a transition of memory in paste, which is visualized as morphological change in crack pattern. Since the memory in paste represents flow pattern induced by the initial vibration, it becomes possible to control and design various crack patterns, such as cellular, lamellar, radial, ring, spiral, and other patterns. | Source: | arXiv, cond-mat/0606446 | Services: | Forum | Review | PDF | Favorites |
