19 Jun 2006 | Subject: | Mesoscopic Systems and Quantum Hall Effect | Abstract: | We show that the effect of finite temperatures T in transport through one-dimensional mesoscopic systems corresponds to an average over the phases an electron acquires between subsequent scattering processes. In drastic contrast to dephasing, this phase averaging does not lead to the addition of resistances in series for more than two barriers. For three strong barriers with conductances G_i and mutual distances larger than the thermal length, we obtain G ~ sqrt{G_1 G_2 G_3} for the total conductance G. For an interacting wire, this implies power laws in G(T) with novel exponents, which we propose as an experimental fingerprint for temperature induced phase averaging. | Source: | arXiv, cond-mat/0606486 | Services: | Forum | Review | PDF | Favorites |
