16 Jan 2007 | Subject: | Soft Condensed Matter | Abstract: | We derive an equation for fields of barchan dunes, which relates the fundamental macroscopic properties characterizing a dune field, namely the inter-dune spacing and the first and second moments of the dune size distribution. This equation is obtained from a mean-field approach and is fulfilled for both simulations and real dune fields. Further, we show that the dune size distributions are log-normal and dunes tend to distribute uniformly in space. Finally, based on simulations, we derive the relationship between these properties and the boundary conditions, giving a theoretical quantitative picture of an entire dune field. | Source: | arXiv, cond-mat/0701367 | Services: | Forum | Review | PDF | Favorites |
