How barchan dunes distribute over deserts
Orencio Durán ; Veit Schwämmle ; Pedro G. Lind ; Hans J. Herrmann ;
Date 16 Jan 2007
Subject Soft Condensed Matter
AbstractWe derive an equation for fields of barchan dunes, which relates the fundamental macroscopic properties characterizing a dune field, namely the inter-dune spacing and the first and second moments of the dune size distribution. This equation is obtained from a mean-field approach and is fulfilled for both simulations and real dune fields. Further, we show that the dune size distributions are log-normal and dunes tend to distribute uniformly in space. Finally, based on simulations, we derive the relationship between these properties and the boundary conditions, giving a theoretical quantitative picture of an entire dune field.
