Effective anisotropy of thin nanomagnets: beyond the surface anisotropy approach

Subject Strongly Correlated Electrons (cond-mat.str-el)
AbstractWe study analytically and numerically the dipolar induced anisotropy for thin nanomagnets. We propose a simple approximation reducing the dipolar interaction to an effective nonhomogeneous anisotropy. This generalizes the results of the surface anisotropy. We illustrate this on several examples which show good agreement between spin--lattice simulations with this effective anisotropy and micromagnetic simulations.
