Magnetic anisotropy effects on quantum impurities in superconducting host | Rok Zitko

10 Aug 2010 | Abstract: | We study the magnetic anisotropy effects on the localized sub-gap excitations
induced by quantum impurities coupled to a superconducting host. We propose
that the multiple-peak structures found in the high-resolution scanning
tunneling spectroscopy of Mn and Cr adatoms on superconducting Pb [Shuai-Hua Ji
et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 226801 (2008)] correspond to the transitions
between the ground state and the sub-gap multiplets split by the magnetic
anisotropy. We discuss the possibility of detecting the Zeeman splitting of
sub-gap states, which would provide an interesting spectroscopic tool for
studying the magnetism on the single-atom level. We also establish the
ground-state phase diagrams for single-channel and two-channel high-spin Kondo
impurities; they unveil surprising complexity which results from the
(multi-stage) Kondo screening in competition with the superconducting
correlations and the magnetic anisotropy splitting of the spin multiplets. | Source: | arXiv, 1008.1734 | Services: | Forum | Review | PDF | Favorites |
