Electric field-induced quantum interference control in a semiconductor: A new manifestation of the Franz-Keldysh effect

Date 11 Aug 2010
AbstractIn a centrosymmetric semiconductor illuminated by a laser and its second harmonic, interference between one- and two-photon absorption results in ballistic current injection, but not modulation of the overall carrier injection rate. Based on an extension of a theory of the Franz-Keldysh effect, we show that an electric field enables modulation of the carrier injection rate. Results from a pump-probe experiment on bulk GaAs are described.
