Strain Effects on Dirac Semimetals: Artificial Fields and Topological Phase Transitions

Date 2 Sep 2016
AbstractEffective gravity and gauge fields emerge for low-energy quasiparticles in topological semimetals. Taking two Dirac semimetals as examples, we show that strain can generate warped spacetime with interesting analogs in astrophysics. We discuss the possibility of simulating event horizons and gravitational lensing effect. We also predict strain-induced topological phase transitions, both in the bulk materials and in their thin films. In thin films, the transition between a quantum spin Hall insulator and a trivial insulator makes it possible to realize a piezo-topological transistor device.
