From glasses to laser cooling: dynamics with broad distributions of sojourn times
Eric Bertin ; Francois Bardou ;
Date 7 Mar 2005
Subject Statistical Mechanics | cond-mat.stat-mech
AbstractPhenomena involving broad distributions of lifetimes arise in a great variety of fields in physics, ranging from glassy dynamics to laser cooling processes or to depinning problems. Interestingly, simple models describing these phenomena can be formulated in a unifying framework in terms of lifetimes variables, thus showing clearly that a universal dynamical mechanism is at play in these systems. Using a formalism based on a master equation approach, we present an explicit solution for the dynamical distribution of lifetimes. This formalism is briefly compared with the renewal process approach. The influence of the relation between sojourn times and the relevant physical variable is also discussed.
