Polyelectrolyte adsorption from semi-dilute solutions | Manoel Manghi

4 Feb 2002 | Subject: | Soft Condensed Matter | cond-mat.soft | Abstract: | We propose a detailed description of the layer formed by polyelectrolyte chains adsorbed onto an oppositely charged surface in the semi-dilute regime. Combining the linearized Poisson-Boltzmann-Edwards theory, the Scaling functional theory and simple scaling arguments, we find that the amount of material carried by the surface scales as $N^{1/2}$ for very long chains (no added salt). This result suggest that the effective charge of the decorated surface (surface plus adsorbed polyelectrolytes) can be much larger than the bare charge of the surface, thus providing a strong theoretical argument for the so called ``over-charging’’ effect. | Source: | arXiv, cond-mat/0202045 | Services: | Forum | Review | PDF | Favorites |
